The Capital Boulevard improvement project is nearing completion at the corner of Peace Street & Capital aka Downtown Blvd (where the new Publix is being built in the John Kane / William Realty development on West St). The Capital Boulevard Corridor Study from June 2012 shows all the recommendations now being installed that are transforming Raleigh’s gateway into Downtown Raleigh. This truly visionary plan creates a new Greenway plan and gorgeous entry into our Capitol city for residents and visitors, alike.
The report shows the new land use changes that will help Raleigh see significant change of what used to be the industrial entryway. The project has been underway in planning for multiple years and under construction since 2017 and is expected to be completed in three years. Check the closures and detours on the NCDOT website. Smokey Hollow is the area the City has named around the development and we’ve seen several businesses and buildings that were cleared for the construction to include The Southland Ballroom, ComedyWorx (that moved over to 3801 Hillsborough Street across from Meredith), Peace Camera and the old ThemeWorks location on the corner of West and Peace Streets (now at the Fairview Road & Capital exit). The new 12 story tall building will include 445 apartments (called Peace), 61,000 square feet of retail, and 295,000 square feet of parking. Increased feet on the street with more people living Downtown is going to be wonderful for existing businesses as well as the new ones coming.
